# Re-register a device

Source: [https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/re-register](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/re-register)

Use re-registration when moving an installation to another account or replacing its registration. For an ordinary connection problem, [restart and diagnose Link](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/troubleshooting) first.

## Aventail Link 2.0.0

For the first connection, follow [Aventail setup](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/install-macos#setup-assistant). Check the account and organisation in the browser before approval.

For an existing 2.x installation:

1. Finish active requests and record the old device ID and deployments. Re-registration replaces the local identity and clears its deployments; the old device is deregistered where possible.
2. In the intended Control account, generate a fresh registration key, or obtain a fleet key from that organisation.
3. Run the complete **already installed** registration command from Control, retaining `LINK_API_BASE` and the appropriate `AVENTAIL_REGISTRATION_KEY` or `AVENTAIL_FLEET_KEY`. See [headless registration](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/getting-started/initial-setup#headless) and [fleet enrollment](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/fleet/overview#create-a-key-and-enroll).
4. Run `aventail status`, confirm the new device is **Online** in the intended account, then deploy and test the required models.
5. If Link reports that old-device deregistration failed, check that old record in Control before removing it. Do not assume the device ID remains the same.

**Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.x desktop app**

1. Finish active requests and note the models you will need afterward.
2. Open **Preferences → Agent → Re-register…**.
3. Read the app's confirmation, then continue only if its stated changes are intended.
4. Sign in to the intended account in the browser and complete setup.
5. Check the account and device in Control, then confirm the device is **Online**.

During our 1.3.2 walkthrough, re-opening setup did not reliably switch away from the previous account. Check the resulting identity before deploying models. Do not assume opening the setup window proves re-registration succeeded.

If the old registration persists, retain the error and contact support. A full [uninstall](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/uninstall) followed by [installation](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/install-macos) was the recovery used in the walkthrough; it removes local installation data and can require model downloads again.

**Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.x headless installation**

The 1.x CLI uses `locai register --registration-key YOUR_REG_KEY`; it does not use the `aventail` command. Consult the installed legacy release before changing its registration. For a move to 2.x, follow [migration guidance](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/install-macos#if-locai-link-is-already-installed) and then the current installation steps. The download hosts now serve Aventail, not a legacy installer.
