# Install Link on Linux

Source: [https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/install-linux](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/install-linux)

Install **Aventail Link 2.x headless** on a Linux x64 machine. The installer verifies the release checksum and installs the `aventail` command for your user.

## Requirements

You need an x86-64 Linux machine with **systemd**, a working user session, `curl` and access to the [required services](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/troubleshooting/common-issues). Allow disk space and memory for the model and its engine. ARM Linux, including Raspberry Pi and Jetson, has no published build.

The release is built on Ubuntu 24.04; validate compatibility before using an older distribution. A [Linux x64 desktop AppImage](https://get.aventail.co.uk/releases/latest/aventail-link-desktop-linux-x64.AppImage) is also available for machines with a graphical session. This page covers the terminal installation.

## Install and register

1. Open **Devices → Register Device → Headless → Linux** in the intended Control account.
2. Run the displayed installer on the Linux machine. The production command is:

```bash
curl -fsSL https://get.aventail.co.uk/install.sh | sh
```

3. Follow the installer's PATH instructions. Open a new terminal if needed, or use its printed executable path.
4. Generate a registration key in Control and copy its complete registration command, including `LINK_API_BASE`. See [headless registration](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/getting-started/initial-setup#headless) for single-device and unattended examples, or [Add devices](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/fleet/overview) for a fleet.
5.  Confirm local status:

```bash
aventail status
```

The default installation root is `~/.local/share/aventail/`. The keyless installer starts the service but does not register a device. Do not run it with `sudo`; it is a per-user installation.

## Keep the service running

The systemd **user** service starts at login. For a server that must remain online after logout and start at boot, ask its administrator to enable lingering for the installing user:

```bash
sudo loginctl enable-linger "$(id -un)"
loginctl show-user "$(id -un)" --property=Linger
```

Confirm `Linger=yes`. Inspect the service and recent logs with:

```bash
systemctl --user status aventail.service
journalctl --user -u aventail.service --since "10 minutes ago"
```

If the user service cannot start, resolve that error before repeating registration. Keep keys and tokens out of shared logs.

## Confirm the result

Check the device is **Online** in the intended Control environment, then [deploy a compatible model](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/getting-started/initial-setup#deploy-a-model) and test an inference request. The illustrated desktop walkthrough uses Apple Silicon; its results do not establish Linux compatibility on your distribution.

If replacing **Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.x**, record the old device and deployments first. Aventail uses a new installation and registration; follow [moving from the old app](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/install-macos#if-locai-link-is-already-installed).
