# Link file locations

In Aventail Link, use **Preferences → Device → Open logs folder** to find diagnostics. Keep credentials and identity files private.

### Find the logs folder

Aventail Link 2.0.0 on macOS, 2 October 2026. Annotated copy of the supplied screenshot; node name and device ID hidden.

1.  **Open logs from Preferences**

    Open Preferences from the Aventail menu-bar icon. In Device, select Open logs folder, highlighted in yellow. The file paths are listed in the expandable reference.

**Read the paths and file reference**

Aventail Link installs for the current user. These are the defaults; `LINK_ROOT` can override the root. Installing the current runtime removes an identified older Locai Link installation, so do not rely on the old directory remaining available.

## Installation roots

| Installation | Default root |
| --- | --- |
| macOS Apple Silicon | `~/Library/Application Support/Aventail-Link/` |
| Linux x64 | `~/.local/share/aventail/` (or `$XDG_DATA_HOME/aventail/`) |
| Windows x64 | `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Aventail-Link\` |

Use `aventail status` after headless installation. If the macOS desktop executable is not on your PATH, run:

```bash
"$HOME/Library/Application Support/Aventail-Link/aventail" status
```

The macOS LaunchAgent is `~/Library/LaunchAgents/uk.co.locai.aventail.plist`. Linux uses `~/.config/systemd/user/aventail.service` (or `$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/systemd/user/aventail.service`); read its logs with `journalctl --user -u aventail.service`. Windows uses the per-user logon task `uk.co.locai.aventail`. See [Linux installation](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/link-app/install-linux) for running after logout.

## Inside the Aventail Link root

| Folder | Purpose |
| --- | --- |
| `aventail` / `aventail.exe` | Installed executable |
| `session.json` | Registration identity and credentials; do not share |
| `models/` | Downloaded model files |
| `engines/` | Downloaded inference engines |
| `state/` | Runtime status, desired deployments and update state |
| `logs/` | Agent diagnostics, including `crash.log` for service errors |
| `previous/` | Previous executable saved by the package when replacing an existing installation |

**Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.x file locations**

| Installation | Default root |
| --- | --- |
| Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.3.2, macOS desktop | `/Library/Locai/` |
| Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.3.2, Linux headless | `~/.local/share/locai/` |

`/Applications/Locai Link.app` and `/Library/Locai/Locai Link.app` belong to **Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.x**. They do not open the new Aventail installation.

Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.x uses `versions/`, `current`, `models/`, `configs/`, `state/` and `logs/` under its own root. In that desktop app, **Preferences → Advanced → Root** and **Logs** open the corresponding folders.

For the Locai Link (Legacy Aventail) 1.3.2 headless Linux service, inspect the journal with:

```bash
journalctl --user -u locai-link-headless.service
```

Use the app or CLI for lifecycle changes. Avoid editing session files or deleting model fragments to repair a connection. Review logs for keys, account details and inference content before sharing them.
