## Connect your model

### Connect Smart Composer to Link

Current Control endpoint capture and the original Smart Composer screenshots. Use your own model ID and port.

1. **Copy the model endpoint**

In Control, start serving your model and open API Usage. Use its host and port with /v1 as the base URL for Smart Composer.

On the same machine as Link, this walkthrough uses http://127.0.0.1:8100/v1.

2. **Add a custom provider**

In Smart Composer settings, choose Add custom provider. Use OpenAI Compatible and your Link base URL ending in /v1. The connection values are below.

[Screenshot: Smart Composer settings with Add custom provider highlighted.](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/img/obsidianstep__9.png)

3. **Open the chat-model form**

In Smart Composer settings, scroll to the end of Chat Models and select Add custom model, just above Embedding Models.

4. **Add a chat model**

Select your provider and enter the exact model ID from /v1/models. Give this chat configuration a recognisable ID, then choose Add.

Provider and model names in the screenshot are examples.

5. **Choose the chat model**

In Chat settings, select your configured Chat model. Applying edits is a separate capability; configure it only when needed.

6. **Open the chat panel**

Close settings and select the Smart Composer wand icon in Obsidian’s left ribbon. The chat panel opens on the right.

**Read the Smart Composer settings**

Use the [Smart Composer plugin](https://github.com/glowingjade/obsidian-smart-composer) by glowingjade. The instructions below concern this plugin; other Obsidian AI plugins have different settings.

## Add your local model

1. [Test your model's API](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/getting-started/run-first-interface) and leave it serving.
2. [Install and enable Smart Composer](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/integration/obsidian#install-smart-composer) if you have not already done so.
3. Open Smart Composer's settings and add a custom provider:

| Field | Value on the same machine as Link |
| --- | --- |
| Provider ID | `locai` |
| Provider type | OpenAI Compatible |
| Base URL | `http://127.0.0.1:8100/v1` |
| API key | `locai-local` for the tested unauthenticated endpoint |

4. Scroll to **Chat Models → Add custom model**, just above **Embedding Models**. Choose provider `locai` and the exact model ID returned by `/v1/models`, for example `Gemma 4 (X-Small)`. Give the configuration a recognisable ID such as `locai-chat`, then select **Add**.
5. Select that model under **Chat model**. Close settings and select the **Smart Composer wand icon** in the left ribbon to open the chat panel.
6. Check the selected model and send a short message without attaching notes.

Use your actual serving port and any authentication required by your endpoint. The example key is not a Control credential.

These fields follow Smart Composer's [custom-provider configuration](https://github.com/glowingjade/obsidian-smart-composer/wiki/1.4-Advanced-Configuration).

## Add notes after chat works

Try one small note and inspect the response. Chat, applying edits and generating embeddings are separate capabilities; a working chat model does not automatically provide the other two.

If basic chat fails, check the provider type, the `/v1` suffix and the model ID before troubleshooting note size. See [connection troubleshooting](https://docs.aventail.co.uk/docs/troubleshooting/common-issues).
